Howdy Doody and the Neighborhood's First TelevisionCarol recalls movies in the Forties giving way to television in the Fifties. Around 1950, when she would have been about twelve, the McFarlands had the neighborhood's first TV, a large black-and-white console with a small screen. She visited daily to watch Howdy Doody and remembers its opening song and characters. Her family soon acquired a TV. Her father watched endlessly from his reserved favorite chair, while her mother seldom watched but liked game shows and possibly Arthur Godfrey.
