Candy Counters, a Picnic, and a September WeddingWhile managing the candy and cosmetic counters at the Highland Ben Franklin store, Iris met Bill, manager of the East Moline store. He teased her by pretending to be a supervisor inspecting her counters, but also sincerely encouraged her business interests. Their first date was a picnic in May, with food described as “Fired chicken—apple pie.” They married in September.
