Green Stamps and Two Brand-New PurchasesCarol recalls that the family never had new furniture, appliances, or cars, and that she was ashamed of their old cars. Mom obtained new presents, small appliances, and accessories by saving S&H Green Stamps, and accumulated silver-plated dinnerware for eight using box tops redeemed for catalog points. Carol then remembers two things Daddy bought new: a turquoise Comet, financed with his first-ever loan through the John Deere Credit Union, and a kitchen table with three leaves and ten chairs from Phil Vinar’s Furniture Store. Her parents did not have a checking account until all the children had left home.
