A Broken Arm and Left-Handed Palm TreesBernard broke his arm trying to play Crack The Whip before mastering ice skating. His father paid seventy-five dollars to have it set and unsuccessfully sought reimbursement from the fire department responsible for the Riverside Park pond. Bernard remembers his father’s sympathy and belief in letting children learn through mistakes. Unimpressed by the newspaper’s description of a fractured wrist, he nevertheless turned the injury to advantage by earning an A-plus for a three-dimensional Yucatan Peninsula map made with his left hand and decorated with green ricrac palm trees.
