In the family's own words

I was in the Illinois National Guard for three years while in my twenties. In 1963, I did six months active duty. Went through eight weeks of Boot Camp at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, during the winter. Learned a lot about myself there. Came through those eight weeks slim and trim and with a good understanding of how much you can take. I finished active duty at Fort Sill, Oklahoma in an Artillery Unit.
