Splits: The Guild Version of a Childhood Game

told by The family

The Guild version of Splits is described as a game for boys only. Two players stand two paces apart and take turns throwing pocketknives into the ground near the other's feet. If a knife sticks, the targeted player must move his feet to that spot; otherwise, he need not move. Play continues until one player is doing the splits and cannot stretch any farther, making the other player the winner.

In the family's own words

(Guild version, for boys only.)

2 players stand 2 paces away from each other and take turns throwing their pocketknife near the feet of their opponent. On his turn the player tries to stick his pocketknife into the ground as close to his playmate’s closed feet as possible. If it doesn’t stick, the targeted player doesn’t have to move his feet. If it does stick, the playmate must move his feet to the spot where the knife sticks. Play continues as each takes turns throwing at the other’s feet until one is doing the splits and can stretch no further and the other player is declared the winner.
