King’s Apple Orchard
Stories set here
- Woodland Walks, Taffy Apples, and Junior High DaysCarol recalled seventh through ninth grade at Coolidge Junior High School. She often walked through a slightly frightening wooded shortcut and stopped at King’s Apple Orchard for a taffy apple on her way home. She earned good grades without much studying and was a favorite of her Home Economics teacher, Mrs. McManus. Her social life included slumber parties, pin curls, record shopping in soundproof listening booths, and jukebox sock hops. She bought her first seamed nylons for her first dance, attended football and basketball games, and played intramural sports.
- A Shortcut and an Unforgettable ApologyRobert remembers a “two-mile walk” to school even in twenty-below weather, with shortcuts through King’s Apple Orchard and Ferry’s Woods. While playing with matches in the woods, he and others started a fire that got out of hand. Iris took him to Ferry’s house to apologize, an experience he never forgot.
- Daddy’s Pride-and-Joy Tree SprayerDaddy built an elaborate tree sprayer from an old Willys chassis, a homemade pump, and eventually a wooden tank from King’s Apple Orchard. Despite wearing a mask, he often became drenched in DDT or Malathion, as did Bernard. Daddy hoped to sell spraying services but never asked the neighbors, leaving the machine chiefly to serve the family’s dozen orchard trees. Bernard also drove it while Daddy guided a heavy scoop to level the driveway and dig a wastewater ditch behind the garage. Dale McFarland thought a shovel would have been faster, but Daddy insisted his machine saved work.
