- Making the Best Better with Biscuits and SewingCarol began cooking and sewing when she joined 4-H, supported by her mother's guidance. She frequently appeared in newspaper photographs and entered food and clothing projects at the Rock Island County Fair. Carol and Diana won trips to the Illinois State Fair for demonstrations on baking powder biscuits and coffee-cake, respectively. Carol practiced until her family was tired of biscuits and presented her demonstration on WOC-TV, ending with a joke about a bride's biscuits being as hard as stepping stones.
- A Scary Ferris Wheel and an Unexpected Teddy BearAt the Illinois State Fair, Carol and Diana especially enjoyed the midway. They rode the double Ferris wheel despite being frightened. When Diana wanted to play midway games, Carol refused because she believed the games were rigged. A barker overheard Carol, called the sisters over, and gave Diana his biggest teddy bear.
