Buck Night and a Car Full of Friends

Carol recalled popular drive-in movies, where staff initially washed the front window before the show. On Buck Night, a dollar admitted as many people as could fit in a car. Once, her group put a couple of friends in the trunk because the front was full.

Drive-in movies were very popular. In the beginning the staff would wash your front window before the movie started. They had what they called “Buck Night.” It cost just a dollar for as many people as your could cram into your car. One time we put a couple of our friends in the trunk because the front of the car was full! I tried smoking a cigarette for the first time while at a drive-in. Sharon Carlson, another lifetime friend, brought a pack with her and we all lit up and took a puff. Ugh! It was awful! None of us liked it and none of us ever smoked. My family also loved drive-in movies. We would make lots of buttered popcorn at home to take with us and put it in Mom’s blue enamel roasting pan. Sometimes we wore our pajamas there.
