Jump-Rope Rhymes and Fun Without Batteries
told by Carol Mae Guild Sutton
Carol recalls chants used while jumping rope, including counting kisses, a broken milk bottle, and teddy-bear actions. She remembers playing many different games and entertaining themselves for hours with simple things, without batteries.
In the family's own words
Cinderella, dressed in yella Went upstairs to kiss a fella. How many kisses did she get? 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc. (until you finally tripped.)
I love coffee, I love tea, I love the boys And the boys love me.
Mother, Mother, Set the table. Don’t forget the Salt, mustard, vinegar, pepper, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5...
Down in the valley, where the green grass grows, There sat Carol as pretty as a rose. Along came John, and kissed her on the nose. How many kisses did she get? 1, 2, 3, 4, 5…
Johnny over the ocean, Johnny over the sea, Johnny broke a milk bottle And blamed it on to me. Johnny told Ma. Ma told Pa. Johnny got a licking, Ha, Ha, Ha.
Turn to the East. Turn to the West. Turn to the one That you love the best. Teddy bear, teddy bear turn around. Teddy bear, teddy bear touch the ground. Teddy bear, teddy bear tie your shoe. Teddy bear, teddy bear read the news. Teddy bear, teddy bear go upstairs. Teddy bear, teddy bear say your prayers. Teddy bear, teddy bear turn out the light. Teddy bear, teddy bear say goodnight. Goodnight!
We played lots of different games and could entertain ourselves for hours doing the simplest things. Yes, I remember when batteries were not required to have fun.
