Sue's Good-Natured Ribbing of Guild Pride

The narrator jokes that Guilds have no humility, modesty, meekness, or reticence. Sue Guild, who was like his sixth sister, teased them about their enormous egos and suggested the well water was to blame. He emphasizes that it was all in fun and playfully declares the Guilds the greatest.

Guilds have none. Sue Guild, who was like my sixth sister, gave us the hardest time about this and brought this famous Guild trait to the fore. “You Guild’s have the biggest egos I’ve ever seen. Every one of you. It must have been something in that well water.” But it was always in fun. Of course, we are the greatest ever, so you’ll just have to live with that if you’re not a Guild.
SO, WHAT’S IN A NAME?
Why do we say “Guylld” instead of “Gild”? Is this because of the British origin and some old-time weird pronunciation of vowels? Don’t know. Do you? I always say Guild rhymes with “wild” or tell people to just say it like in the song: “Bewitched Bothered and Beguiled,” which would work for Barb and Bob and Brian as well.
