A Scooter Scar and a Strawberry Laugh

Carol fell from her scooter near the strawberry patch and badly cut her right knee. With Mom unable to leave Barbara, who had double pneumonia, Virginia arranged for Mrs. Hannah to drive them to the doctor. Carol received four clamps and retained a visible scar. Back home, her sisters, Marilyn, and Patty claimed to have found flesh from her leg, but Virginia identified it as strawberry—a mistake they still laughed about.
In the family's own words
One day, when I was about eight or nine years old, I was riding my scooter near our strawberry patch and fell off, cutting my right knee on the sharp edge of the scooter. It was a big cut and really bled. Mom knew I had to go to the doctor for stitches, but Barbara had double pneumonia at the time and she didn’t dare leave her. Virginia came over to help. She ran down to Mrs. Hannah’s house to see if she could drive us to the doctor’s office. Virginia held me with a towel wrapped around my leg while Mrs. Hannah drove. I had four clamps put in to hold the wound together. I have a visible scar from it on my knee to this day. When we got home, my sisters and Marilyn and Patty told Virginia they had found the piece of flesh that had come out of my leg. Virginia took one look at it and said, “Oh you silly girls, it’s just a piece of strawberry!” We still laugh about this.
