Holiday Card Games and Mom’s Perfect Hand

Carol recalls lively games of 500 whenever the family gathered at home for holidays, with improvised prizes and laughter that prompted Mom to tell the girls to settle down. Once, Carol and her sisters stacked the cards to give Mom a perfect hand. They intended to reveal the trick, but Mom was so excited that they could not bring themselves to tell her.

I would certainly be remiss (and in the doghouse with my sisters) if I didn’t write about the wild 500 card games we have had through the years. Whenever we were all home for holidays we always had as many card games as we could squeeze in. We would scurry around the house improvising prizes. No fun to play without prizes! We would have such fun laughing, giggling and carrying on! Mom would always say, “Now, you girls settle down and play cards.” I’ll never forget—and I know my sisters will never forget—the time we stacked the cards and gave Mom a perfect 500 hand. We had planned to tell her the little trick we played on her, but she was so excited about her perfect hand we didn’t have the heart to tell her.
