Dee's Chapter
A Loving Day with Bernie in San Francisco
told by Delores Ann Guild Comstock
In a poem signed Dee, Delores describes visiting her brother Bernie at his Victorian home in San Francisco. She admires his flowers and orchids, creative success, and zest for life. They visit an old-time ice cream parlor and order chocolate Yoplait with pears. His encouragement and conversation leave her inspired, and she bids him an affectionate farewell as she boards a trolley car with a fifteen-cent fare.
In the family's own words
I am going to San Francisco With flowers in my hair. Stopping to see my brother. His Victorian house is there.
Amidst the plants and flowers, I found my brother tending with care, With his eyebrows raised and curled, A friendly smile and a, “Hello, my dear.”
His home is quite extraordinary, With bananas on the wall. Yellow is his happy color, And his orchids will leave you in awe.
Bernie had a vision and through his dreams learns more. He’s created himself a great success with commercials and books and a Clio Award. He tells a great story of all his merry making. The traveling, the dancing, the dining out was all there for the taking.
He took me to an old-time ice cream parlor, We ordered chocolate Yoplait with pears. He reminds me to exercise and do yoga, And I’ll live to be one hundred years.
My day was full and pleasant, My brother is so full of life. His conversation inspiring and interesting. I listened carefully to his profound insights.
I did not want to leave that day, I love the way he helps me progress. I thanked him sincerely for his wonderful ways. He said, “That’s what I do best.”
As I boarded the trolley car, And paid my fifteen-cent fare, I waved good-bye and blew a kiss, And left my heart… with you there.
With love, Dee
