An Ice Cream Stop at Roselles

On trips with Daddy, the children begged for cones whenever they passed Roselles on 23rd Avenue. Although Daddy often refused, occasional stops brought great happiness. The store sold Sealtest Ice Cream, and some cones contained a “Free Cone” note in the tip.

Daddy often took us out to the airport to let us watch the airplanes coming and going from the airfield. We also went to the air shows there. We would take blankets and sit out in the fields surrounding the airfield getting covered with those thorny, sticky sand-burrs that clung to your clothing. But it was fun and free. When we took these little trips with Daddy, we often passed an ice cream store on 23rd Avenue called Roselles. The minute we spotted it, we would start begging for an ice cream cone. Lots of times Daddy said no, but the times he let us stop, oh, how happy we were. They sold Sealtest Ice Cream and some of the cones had a note in the tip of the cone stating: “Free Cone.”
