Dee's Chapter
Iris, Our Gentle Second Mother
told by Delores Ann Guild Comstock
In a loving poem signed Dee, Delores thanks her sister Iris for the care she gave her six younger siblings. An only child for over five years, Iris became like a second mother, feeding, bathing, hugging and comforting the children while helping their busy mother. Dee remembers Iris’s gentle ways and expresses lasting gratitude and unconditional love.
In the family's own words
The most beautiful sister with the most beautiful name. Growing up for you must have been all fun and games. You were Daddy’s little girl so spoiled and revered. As you were the only child for over five years.
One by one, we came into your life, I doubt this was foreseen, You were like our second mother, So unselfish to Mom’s needs.
Bernie, Bob, Carol, Delores, Diana and Barb. Twelve more feet for running Six more heads and seven more beds. You must have thought your mom was just funning.
We needed to be fed, bathed, held and hugged. As you so caringly wiped away our tears, And washed our faces, And so gently calmed our fears.
You were always there To bandage up our knees, To give us a hug and all of those kisses. I remember you most when I think of these.
It is love that brings a family close. The kind of love you shared. I am indebted to the special way You showed our Mom you cared.
Mom was a busy lady, then, With cooking and canning, and all those clothes. But you were always willing to be there When Mom needed you the most.
I will always remember your gentle ways, And give thanks for the role you so graciously accepted. You have been generous, kind, concerned and devoted. I love you with all my heart. Absolutely no exceptions.
Love, Dee
