Rainy Days and Sunset Campfires at White Eagle

Carol attended White Eagle 4-H Camp with Dee and Eilene Peterson, wearing halter tops her mother made for the three of them. They slept in tents, ate in a communal dining room, and used latrines down a long wooded path. Swimming in the river, making crafts, singing around sunset campfires, and making S’mores kept the week enjoyable despite constant rain.

I also went to camp at White Eagle 4-H Camp with Dee and Eilene Peterson. Mom made all three of us halter tops to wear. It was rustic camping as I remember it. We slept in tents and ate in a communal dining room. There were latrines down a long path and into the woods. We swam in the river, made crafts and sang around a sunset campfire. We toasted marshmallows and made S’mores. It rained all week, but we didn’t care. I was also a Brownie, then a Girl Scout. Daddy drove me to Camp Shabone in Port Byron many summers. I guess you could say I was the “camper” in the family. Some of the camp songs I remember were: “Make new friends and keep the old, one is silver and the other is gold...”, “We’re on the upward trail, we’re on the upward trail, singing, singing, everybody singing, as we go...”, and Tell Me Why and Down in the Valley.
